A Quick Word About The Economy...

Before we go any further I want to address a concern that is probably popping up in the back of your mind right now: the current state of our economy.

You may be thinking that with everything going on, this is no time to start or grow a business. If that's the case, you are part of the majority - and it's completely understandable that you are concerned.

But do you know that there are actually TWO economies?

First there is the "Macro Economy".

This economy is influenced greatly by the big banks, big corporations, consumer confidence, etc. It is the macro economy that is currently recessing and it is very difficult for any of us to figure out exactly how we as individual business owners can have a positive effect on it.

This "general" economy is the one we hear the most about on the news – unfortunately it is mostly bad stuff. When we do hear good news, it's usually false or overrated and it causes a yo-yo effect.

It goes something like this:

First: "Hold on to your hats (and homes) everybody... this is going to be one bumpy ride."

Then: "Three days of positive returns on the stock market - we're on the rebound folks, so get out those credit cards!"

Finally: "Recent gains have been totally wiped out by this most recent 'correction' in the market."

When it comes to the macro (or "general") economy, I can really only give you one of two pieces of advice...

1. Turn off the news entirely; or
2. Bear in mind how media outlets benefit from serving up a continuous stream of the "yo-yo effect"

But there is a second, more important economy... one that very few people ever mention because most aren't even aware that it exists.

It's the "Micro Economy".

The micro economy is your personal economy and it is influenced by your specific actions in the areas of creating, saving and spending money.

In short – it is the micro economy that you have direct influence over by where you choose to focus your attention and your actions.

There is great power in understanding the difference between these two economies because, when you do, you can then CHOOSE to focus on the one that you can exert influence and control over – namely the micro economy.

And when you can produce positive results in your micro economy, there is the side-benefit of incremental improvements to the macro economy as well.

I find it helpful to remind myself of this even in good economic times because it keeps me focused on the areas over which I have control – the areas where I can generate tangible results.
